THE MATCH PLAY BYE TOURNAMENT
What is a bye? Byes are a "free pass" to certain rounds of the finals. The more byes you earn the later you enter the finals and closer to winning the tournament.
The most important bye you can earn is called the Super Bye which gets you 6 byes in the finals and puts you directly into the last match of your division. All Super Bye winners are guaranteed to earn a minimum of $5,000 in the Scratch Mini and $2,500 in the Handicap Mini. There is one Super Bye awarded in each division. At the last two Mini-Eliminators all three bowlers that advanced to the finals shootout were Super Bye winners.
The Mini-Eliminator Finals usually takes between 6 and 8 elimination (beat half-the-field) rounds to crown a champion. To give yourself a better chance at winning the $20,000 top prize you should try and earn as many byes in the finals as possible.
Bowlers earning 1 bye start their finals in Round 2
(Guaranteed $500 scratch/$300 handicap)
Bowlers earning 2 byes start their finals in Round 3
(Guaranteed $750 scratch/$450 handicap)
Bowlers earning 3 byes start their finals in Round 4
(Guaranteed $1,000 scratch/$600 handicap)
Bowlers earning the Super Bye start their finals in Round 7
(Guaranteed $5,000 scratch/$2,500 handicap)
HOW TO EARN BYES AND SUPER BYES
All bowlers making the finals through a qualifying squad automatically earn 1 bye and are guaranteed a minimum of $500 in the Scratch Mini and $300 in the Handicap Mini. To earn multiple byes, including the Super Bye, a bowler must re-enter a qualifying squad AFTER they have advanced to the finals. The byes will be earned as follows:
- The 8 highest re-entry series by finalists in the senior (scratch) and the two handicap divisions (220 & under/199 & under) will advance to their own match play tournament to determine who gets the byes in their respective divisions.
- The 16 highest re-entry series by finalists in the 49 & under scratch division will advance to their own match play tournament to determine who gets the byes.
- The Match Play "Bye" Tournament will be held on Sunday, February 6th at 9am.
- Each division will have its own match play competition with all matches using single game elimination.
- First round matches will be determined by the re-entry series; highest re-entry series bowls against the lowest re-entry series in each division, etc.
- If you win 1 match you earn 2 byes (start your finals in Round 3).
- If you win 2 or 3 matches you earn 3 byes (start your finals in Round 4).
- The winner of each Match Play Bye Tournament earns the Super Bye and enters the finals when 1 bowler remains in their division. The Super Bye winners are guaranteed a minimum of $5,000 in the Scratch Mini and $2,500 in the Handicap Mini and if they win their one match they advance directly to the Championship Shootout.
